Hanging Lake Trail Guide

Hanging Lake: A Jewel of the Rockies (Reservations Required!) Guide

Prepare to be mesmerized by the ethereal beauty of Hanging Lake, a true natural wonder nestled in Glenwood Canyon. This stunning lake, fed by Bridal Veil Falls, is renowned for its crystal-clear turquoise waters, delicate travertine formations, and lush hanging gardens. The hike to Hanging Lake is a challenging but rewarding experience, offering breathtaking views and a chance to connect with nature's splendor. Be sure to secure your reservation in advance, as access is limited to protect this fragile ecosystem. Hanging Lake's unique beauty is a result of its geological formation. Over thousands of years, mineral-rich water has cascaded over the cliffs, depositing travertine, a type of limestone, which has created the delicate hanging gardens and the lake's distinctive turquoise hue. The lake's fragile ecosystem is home to a variety of plant and animal life, making it a valuable natural resource. Due to its popularity and sensitivity, strict regulations are in place to preserve its pristine condition. The primary activity at Hanging Lake is, of course, the hike to the lake itself. The trail is approximately 1.2 miles uphill and is considered strenuous, with steep inclines and rocky terrain. Once you reach the lake, take your time to soak in the breathtaking views, explore the boardwalks, and admire the waterfalls. Swimming and wading in the lake are strictly prohibited to protect the delicate travertine formations. While there are no specific culinary traditions associated with Hanging Lake, pack a picnic lunch to enjoy at the designated picnic area near the trailhead. Remember to pack out everything you pack in to help preserve this natural treasure.
